It is common knowledge that the cost of living has been on a constant increase for some time. However, as we run through the most expensive cities to live in, the concept of the relativity of wealth becomes very real. The Crazy Tourist complied the list of most expensive cities to live in, for 2017 by using data from Numbeo. As expected, the most expensive cities are located principally throughout Europe and the U.S. However, the list has some surprises instore, such as the failure of Paris, Monaco, St Petersburg and Vienna to make entries in this list.

Interestingly, the residents of these rich cities spend their monthly budgets in varied ways. For example, San Francisco residents spend around three-quarters of their monthly budget on rent, while their counterparts in Geneva spend just half. On the upside, you can get a beer for around $6, in any of these expensive cities in 2017!

A population exceeding 13 million people makes the capital of Japan, the most highly populated metropolitan area, worldwide. Tokyo is home to 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, the highest number of any city in the world. Locals spend an average of $2,208 per month, to live in the city.
